What do I need besides books?
What you need (besides books)
Scalpel
This is the first thing you need to get.
You can buy scalpel and blades in the small Semmelweis store at the NET building .
The best blade size to get is a 22:
White coat
You definitely don’t need this for the first two years.
Personally, when I came to the clinic (fifth semester), I realized that being 190cm is not ideal when trying to find a coat, so I decided to get my own. That way I don’t have to look through the large number of coats in the dressing room every time I come to class.
So, don’t bother getting your own coat unless you need one for yourself in the clinic (but make sure you keep it clean).
Microscope
If you can borrow one, then do it. If you have a lot of money, then fine.
If you are an average student (financially), don’t waste your money on a microscope!
During the exam period you will be able to go to the Histology consultations and look at all the slides (the same slides that you will be given on the exam).
There is an advantage to having a microscope at home: During the semester you can borrow (for a fee) a slide box, containing all the slides that you will be responsible to know for the semifinals and final exam. The problem is that, unless you already have a microscope or know someone who does, it is expensive to get one.
It is possible to rent a microscope from the Dept. of Anatomy, but the number is very limited, so make sure you get one early in the semester!
Stethoscope
You will need to get one when you start the third year.
I actually recommend students to get one in the second year, when you start with EKG and heart sounds in Physiology. You will be listening to a lot of heart sounds in the clinic (fifth semester), so it never hurts to practice it whenever you have the chance. The better you learn EKG and heart sounds in the second year, the easier it will be to do well in the first part of pathophysiology and internal medicine.

I recommend the Littmann Classic II, perfect for students. You do not need the fancy computerized stethoscopes!
