Who is this person?
Oh, where do I begin?!
Stephen Fry is currently the host of the popular tv show QI on BBC, but he is also a great comedian, intellectual, writer, commentator, tv and radio personality, and a tech-savvy brainiac who makes you think! A rare breed indeed.

Why should you listen to him?
Because he is the closest thing you come to a true British intellectual in our time and he is extremely entertaining (try watching the QI episodes on youtube and you will be stuck spending your exam periods in front of the computer…).

Enjoy!

If you want to get to know this cameleon of a human being, I can strongly recommend his biography “The Stephen Fry Chronicles”:

He is also known as part of the Fry and Laurie comedy duo (Laurie…Hugh Laurie… dr House, remember?)

and other smaller roles:

From Blackadder

But now he’s most famous as the great host for QI, one of my favorite shows on TV.

A very first semester for some – the end of a period in one’s life for others.
Congratulations to both!

Budapeststudent.com has been on holiday, but I am in back in action now!

I have tried to sum up some of the important happenings for students at Semmelweis University thus far this semester.

Freshman’s Day

First I want to sum up some of the great happenings in the student community at Semmelweis University this Fall.

It all started when the International Student Association of Semmelweis (ISAS) had a great freshman’s day in September.

More pictures can be found by befriending ISAS on Facebook.

Rebusløp 2011

The Association of Norwegian Students Abroad (ANSA) had their annual welcome party in each of the four university cities (Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs). Always a great success!

For more pictures, join the ANSA Budapest Facebook group.

ANSA Hungary sports day

ANSA Hungary has also arranged the annual sports day. The best part about the sports day is that all the contestants dress up!

Romania Project

ANSA Hungary established this project in 2006 and is now well known among most of the Semmelweis University students. They had a trip to Romania Sep 30th – Oct 3rd.

To read more about this project, read more on its website ANSA Students help students.

New ISAS Chairman

And ISAS has elected a new chairman. Their new chairman is Charlie Attariani and I wish him the best of luck in his new job.

Read more on semmelweis-univ.hu.

Lots of parties

In addition to this there has been lots of parties. The Norwegian students have their Stammtisch and pubquiz, and there are lots of theme parties during the Fall (Halloween etc.)
Maor Leibzon is the guy to ask when it comes to parties mixing internationals and Hungarians:)

And what about the rest of this semester?

Closer working relationship between ISAS and Budapeststudent.com, and ANSA and Budapeststudent.com. More coming!

The things you can expect in the months to come:

More pictures from Budapest and stories from my time there

More information about my work as a turnus doctor and now a resident in surgery

Updated topic lists and notes (for this I need YOUR help, too!)

Review of books, apps and useful websites for your studies

More information about the other university cities (Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs)

And lots more!

We are closing in on a new semester at Semmelweis University. My summer was spent working, travelling to Asia and reading some fantastic books.

The book that made the strongest impression on me was:

The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer
By Siddhartha Mukherjee

You can read more about dr Mukherjee and his book here: An Oncologist Writes ‘A Biography Of Cancer’

After finishing this majestic piece of work I realized dr Mukherjee was awarded the Pulitzer Prize (named after a Hungarian!) for 2011: The Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction 2011

For those of you that want to find other great biographies in medicine, I recomment the following page/blog entry:

Turnustjenesten i Norge

Premiere: September 2011

You are summoned to an emergency at a nearby café. Arriving on the scene, you find a middle-aged, obese man sagging in his chair. Bystanders inform you that the patient had ordered a coffee and two croissants. After he had been served, he began to make forceful and wild gestures, swept everything off from his table, howled incoherently, then collapsed back into his chair.
On physical examination he is still uttering incoherent sentences. The patient resists physical examination and beats about with his arms. However, there are some students in Budapest that have blogs and I will try to present them here on my website. If you have a blog and would like for me to let all the Budapeststudent.com readers know about it, then please let me know!
